Job Responsibilities: To assist with the daily duties of the Histology Lab, which primarily include dissection of formalin-fixed tissue, case/specimen identification and tracking, assist with inventory management, general laboratory maintenance; and assist with the daily duties of the Clinical Pathology Lab as assigned. Proper identification, trimming and orientation of trimmed tissues, ability to identify problem and special handling cases, and accurate and legible notetaking are required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Methods, materials, equipment, and techniques of laboratory testing related to histology and clinical pathology
Animal anatomy and basic tissue/organ identification
Basic principles, practices, and procedures of laboratory testing including operation of basic laboratory equipment
Safe laboratory practices
Skill & Ability to:
Identify and trim formalin-fixed tissues with a scalpel and manually label containers per laboratory protocols with a high level of quality and accuracy
Read and follow SOPs
Work with concentrations, dilutions, weight solids, and measure liquids
Operate different machines and instruments (hotplates, water bath, pH meter, automatic dispenser, wash machine and dryer etc.)
Work independently as well as part of a team
Use effective verbal and written communication
Comments: Practical laboratory experience and completed coursework in animal anatomy/physiology are required. Certified Veterinary Technician or coursework in accredited Veterinary Technician program OR B.S. in Biology or other Life Science are strongly preferred. SDSU is a tobacco free environment.
